All in Fishing
We settled in, then began checking our surroundings. The cabin was a 60-second walk from Kezar Lake, one of Maine's premier fisheries. Numerous other ponds were nearby. We had access to kayaks, and canoes, and a johnboat. The surrounding area had farm stands, and hikes, and restaurants, and best of all, we had an entire month here.
The early fall season is an active time for wildlife in this part of Montana. The moose are in full rut, and the elk are bugling, while working out a hierarchy of the biggest and baddest bulls. Bighorn sheep and mule deer are still in bachelor groups during the truce time before their own annual wars of dominance.
One of the most fearless and voracious fish swimming around in the eastern United States today is the Bowfin. Also called dogfish, mudfish, mud pike, swamp trout and grindle, these hungry predators are always on the hunt for something to eat.
In the Upper Great Lakes states, the end of summer marks the beginning of the fall spawning run of German brown trout and salmon. Lake Superior, the biggest and deepest of them all, is a good example of how early the transition from lake to stream fish takes place.
Brown trout are one of the three main species of trout living in Lake Michigan: including brown trout, lake trout and rainbow trout (steelhead). During the winter and early spring months when the weather is cold, brown trout are one of the easiest of the three species to catch out on the big lake.
Gentle rain fell. The brook murmured gently in some places, fairly roared in others. Tammy Wilson and Jim Tedesco waded carefully, casting flies in an attempt to fool a wary trout. We were fishing the Oconoluftee River, on the reservation of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, in western North Carolina.
Any visitor to Florida's Ocala National Forest needs to include the Alexander Springs Run on their list of things to see. This first-magnitude spring discharges over 60 million gallons of spring water daily, with a boil strong enough to be easily observed from the shoreline.
Most saltwater gamefish, redfish included, eat some combination of smaller fish, shrimp, and crabs. In my 40 years of fly fishing for redfish, 25 of them as a fly-fishing guide, my taste in flies has evolved. But not as much as you might think!
Most fishermen (and fisherwomen) are very familiar with the Largemouth Bass. This common fish goes by many names: black bass, green bass, largie, bigmouth bass, bucketmouth bass, and often just plain bass.
Conventional wisdom says, “Use an eight-weight outfit for saltwater, including redfish.” Back when I was guiding, when I got calls about redfish charters from people who I didn’t know, and they asked me about tackle, that’s what I told them.
